This collection is primarily family photographs: portraits of Alfred Kroeber and Thoedora Kroeber (some are publicity photos), Alfred Kroeber's relatives, and snapshots of Kroeber’s children and grandchildren. In addition, there are photos related to Alfred Kroeber's professional career including photographs of colleagues, Juan Dolores, Ishi, Robert Spott, and other native peoples. There are some photos of trips to Peru, Mexico, Paris and US locations.

The Hare collection contains 575 silver gelatin prints, taken by Mrs. Hare circa 1900-1910. Most of the photographs were taken in and around the Santa Clara Valley region of Northern California, especially in the vicinities of Santa Clara and San Jose. Other areas featured in the collection are Saratoga, Los Gatos, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Big Basin Park, San Francisco, Monterey, Palo Alto, Sonoma County, Lake County, and Pebble Beach. Alphonse Louis Pinart (1852-1911) was a French scholar with wide linguistic and ethnological interests who traveled extensively, collecting documents and information as he went. Most of his collections as of 1885 were acquired by H. H. Bancroft. This group consists of diaries, notebooks, correspondence and other personal papers. Material primarily of linguistic interest, or concerned with the history of particular areas, has been assigned separate call numbers, and readers should consult the manuscripts catalog and A Guide to the Manuscript Collections of the Bancroft Library, v. 1.
