Peveril Meigs Baja California Research Materials

About this Collection

Peveril Meigs III conducted several geographic field expeditions to northern Baja California between 1925 and 1936. This collection includes his photographic prints, scanned negatives, glass lantern slides, journals, and a 1925 album documenting his observations of the geology, climate, indigenous populations, mission sites, and local culture. These materials were gathered in preparation for his 1932 doctoral dissertation entitled "The Dominican Missions of Lower California" and his ethnographic monograph, The Kiliwa Indians of Lower California (1939).

Scans of individual journal pages include links, where possible, to photographic images mentioned in Meigs's descriptive daily entries; conversely, the photographs and negatives include links to the relevant journal, so readers can recreate Meigs's journey.
