About this Collection

Images of locomotives, trains, and sections of track from the San Diego & Arizona and San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway companies, photographed by R. P. Middlebrook. SD&A was a short line railroad founded by John D. Spreckels in 1906, originating in San Diego and terminating in El Centro, California. It was built to connect San Diego to a transcontinental rail link to the east.

Middlebrook was a locomotive engineer for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. He photographed, wrote about, and collected materials related to locomotives and railroad history.
