About this Collection

This collection of 27 photographic prints and one blueprint consists primarily of views related to the irrigation of California mission land. The photographs were taken or collected by Frank Adams (1875-1967), a University of California, Berkeley professor who specialized in irrigation. The collection includes photographs of tools and plows (some hand-made by Indians) dams, aqueducts, reservoirs, cisterns, etc. Views of agricultural land depicting olive, pear and Bidwell orange trees are featured, as well as several general views of missions (Purísima, San Luis Rey, Carmel, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Sonoma and San Antonio). Also included is a photo of land farmed by Russians at Fort Ross, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's home in Sonoma, and a blueprint of an old mission dam at Santa Barbara....
