City of Claremont History Collection

Owning Institution: Claremont Colleges Library

About this Collection

The City of Claremont History Collection documents the development of Claremont from its boom years at the end of the nineteenth century to the present day. Composed of photographs taken by various amateur and professional photographers over a one hundred year span, the collection provides a glimpse of Claremont’s past through photographs of its buildings, neighborhoods, local landscape, and daily life.

Though many of the photographs in the City of Claremont History Collection are unsigned, the collection contains many examples of the work of local photographer Loyd Cooper (Pomona College, 1916) who documented life in Claremont and the surrounding areas during the twenties and thirties through his cityscapes, rural landscapes, and aerial photographs.

This collection of photographs is drawn from Special Collections’ Claremontiana collection of local history, which consists of local newspapers, maps, scrapbooks of clippings, manuscripts, and minutes of clubs and civic groups as well as every issue of The Claremont Courier from 1908 to the present.

The original prints and negatives are in the Libraries’ Special Collections in Honnold/Mudd Library. This project is a work in progress, so please check back for updates.
