About this Collection
The Susanne B. Wilson papers document her political life while serving on the San Jose City Council from 1974-1978. Wilson worked closely with Janet Gray Hayes, the first female Mayor of San Jose. Wilson served as Vice Mayor in her last year of office, followed by her successful election bid to the Santa Clara Board of Supervisors (1979-1990). As a councilwoman, Wilson contributed to the slow-growth movement, promoted gender equality in the Police Department, and she worked on the behalf of the YWCA with the San Jose Police Department to provide sensitivity training for police officers working with rape victims, and many other issues. A small portion of her papers are on deposit and will be added to in the future.The digital collection represents a snapshot of her publicity photographs that include city council meetings, her work as a Supervisor, meetings with various state and national officials, including Congressmen, Ted Kennedy Don Edwards, and Norman Mineta, California Senator Pete Wilson and Alfred Alqusit, Rosalynn Carter, Zoe Lofgren, Dianne McKenna, and Janet Gray Hayes.
