About this Collection
Maps and Mapping at the Claremont Colleges offers digital access to printed maps available at Special Collections and Libraries of the Claremont Colleges Library, as well as those available at Ella Strong Denison Library at Scripps College. This digital collection offers researchers access to a variety of maps that cover United States, California, and World geography, with a focus on the Pacific Ocean and Western Hemisphere, spanning the years 1542-1949. Highlighted in the collection are maps that depict California as an island, including maps that maintained the myth of California existing as an island long after the theory had been disproved.The creation of this collection was made possible by a generous donation from William Brownell, father of a Pomona College student. The donated funds allowed for the initial digitization and curation of 150 maps, increasing the availability of these primary sources that can be used to enrich courses in History, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies and environmental analysis. As a digital collection, they can serve the community of the Claremont Colleges both in and outside of the classroom, as part of online exhibits and as teaching and research tools in the larger scholarly community.
