About this Collection

This archive contains materials which describe the complex aspects of the Pomona College Organic Farm’s history since the late 1990s. The Farm began as a guerilla movement by a group of students in 1998 who were composting food waste from the dining halls in an open spot in the Wash on Pomona College’s campus. They began to plant crops and fruit trees in this area and slowly expanded the Farm site, leading to some tensions with the administration. In the mid-2000s, students and faculty successfully formalized the Farm boundaries and established the Farm as a part of the Environmental Analysis program at Pomona College.

This collection contains interviews, photographs, documents, academic research and papers, posters, maps, and other ephemera related the Farm from late 1990s to today. The founders of this collection hope to preserve memories and snapshots of the ever-changing Farm site and programs so that current and future generations of Farm users will be able to look back and remember where the Farm started and how it got to where it is today.
