Pioneering Punjabis Digital Archive

About this Collection

This is the full repository for the Pioneering Punjabi Digital Archive, the most extensive collection of archival material documenting the first significant South Asian community in the United States. The collection includes over 1,300 photographs, rare archival films, letters, newspaper articles, songs, and audio interviews of South Asians who arrived in California from the Punjab region of north India beginning in the 1890s.

The collection is curated by Dr. Nicole Ranganath, a historian, filmmaker, and faculty member in the UC Davis Middle East/South Asia Studies Program. The materials were contributed by Yuba City’s Punjabi American Heritage Society, Mrs. Manjeet Sibia, and numerous Punjabi American families and individuals. Mrs. Sibia’s contributions reflect the work by her late husband who was a UC Davis librarian, Tejinder (Ted) Sibia. The materials in this repository will be enhanced by visiting <pioneeringpunjabis.ucdavis.edu>, a more heavily curated subset of these materials that includes contextual scholarship and classroom tools.
