Owning Institution: Claremont Colleges Library

About this Collection

Curated and donated by Frederick McCormick (1870–1951), the Frederick McCormick Collection at the Claremont Colleges Library comprises a total of 128 titles and 808 volumes of Korean rare books and manuscripts from the 16th century to the 19th century. This valuable collection not only provides great contents on the various aspects of early Korean society and cultural life, but also extremely fine and rare samples of early Korean book arts and typography. The collection also possesses considerable scholarly value as it includes a number of complete sets of rare books that are not easily found even in Korea. 23 titles and 225 volumes of literary works and anthologies were stamped with collectors' seals from famous literati figures. Some of the books also bear notes and signature of James Scarth Gale, the famous missionary and scholar of Korean Studies, making the provenance of the collection more interesting and fascinating.

Claremont Colleges Library would like to acknowledge our gratitude to the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation and the National Library of Korea for their support for making this precious collection discoverable.
