Owning Institution: UC San Diego, Special Collections and Archives
About this Collection
The Turner Collection comprises more than 300 items that help document the lives and contributions of American Blacks, largely through original photographic images. Dating from the mid-nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century, the collection includes photocards, cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, posters, tintypes, pinback buttons, and pamphlets, all of which reflect some aspect of African-American life, achievement, or challenges. Many of the images focus on the migration of Blacks to the American West that preceded the great migration from the South after World War I.Most of the subjects in the photographs are unidentified by name. The photographer or photo studio is cited, if known.
The collection is a gift from Steve Turner, UC San Diego class of '82 and an avid collector. View this collection on the contributor's website.
