This collection contains meteorological and aerosol measurements made at a field site located near the western shoreline of the Salton Sea, California. The Salton Sea is an endorheic body of water that lies within a northwest-southeast oriented rift valley that is surrounded by complex terrain. The adjacent land surfaces are characterized by barren lands, desert shrubland, heavily irrigated cropland, and playa surfaces. The region is frequently impacted by dust storms originating from the nearby Anza Desert and the barren and anthropogenically impacted landscapes of the surrounding region. The Salton Sea is rapidly drying due to climate change and changes in water management. As such, it is expected that dust in the region will intensify over the coming years. This data set contains meteorological and aerosol measurements useful to quantify dust and the high wind speed events that generate dust outbreaks, including measurements from an upward pointing LiDAR, upward and downward longwave and shortwave fluxes from radiometers, surface synoptic meteorological measurements, atmospheric soundings from radiosondes, and measurements of aerosol microphysical properties.
