A new chapter for the San Diego Public Library began on Sept. 28, 2013, when the doors to the new Central Library opened to the public. The new construction serves as the main Library for the thirty-nine branch libraries and book mobiles throughout San Diego. The 9-story building is home to numerous special collections, holds events year around and has received several architectural awards. The new library is the historical successor to the Carnegie Library building (1902-1954) and the Central Library (1954-2013). According to former head librarian, Clara E. Breed, in her historical work, San Diego Public Library History 1882-1982, the earliest library in San Diego was founded by the Franciscans at Mission San Diego de Alcala in 1769.
