In 1996, under the auspices of the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), conservation architects Agnieszka Dobrowolska and Jaroslaw Dobrowolski conducted a condition survey of the Synagogue of Maimonides in Historic Cairo - one of only two remaining synagogues of what originally were twelve in Harat Al Yahud, the Jewish Quarter of Cairo. The currently-standing building, dating back to the mid-nineteenth century but believed to be built atop the site where preeminent physician and philosopher Rabbi Moses Ben Maimoun settled in Cairo after his arrival in 1165, was left in poor condition due to earthquakes and a groundwater flooding problem in Historic Cairo. In 1999, ARCE sponsored a feasibility study of water and waste problems affecting the Synagogue of Maimonides, conducted by Dr. Kamal Hefny. View this collection on the contributor's website.
