This exhibition features 13 works spanning 45 years, showcasing Lewis Carleton Ryan’s artistic versatility. From rural landscapes to vivid sketches of everyday life captured during his travels across more than 5,500 miles, these pieces offer a glimpse of the world through the eyes of an Escondido artist with a global perspective.Photographs from the collection were exhibited in the Pioneer Room from April 26th to September 4th 2025. Lewis Carleton Ryan (1894–1982): Lewis Carleton Ryan, an illustrator, block printer, writer, and generous public benefactor, was renowned for his woodblock prints. Born in Austin, Texas, he began sketching in grade school. Inspired by his artist brothers in New York, he pursued art education, graduating from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1923. Ryan spent many years in Los Angeles creating woodblock art. Upon retirement, he moved to Escondido, marrying Frances Beven in 1951.
