About this Collection
“HOME” is the result of the collaborative efforts of Escondido Public Library’s Pioneer Room and Adult Literacy Services to establish Escondido’s own living archive. An archive can be said to be “living” when it captures the experiences, discourse, and activities of a contemporary society, all of which are needed to document our present reality and understand our shared history.Intended to be reflective, thought-provoking, and dialogue-driven, Escondido’s Living Archive celebrates the dynamics of its local community. It welcomes collaboration and thrives on interaction. “HOME” itself seeks to facilitate conversations about origins, self-identity, and the constructions of belonging.
Escondido Public Library’s Read, Succeed lifelong learners hail from an array of different backgrounds, overcoming formidable obstacles to achieve their goals. Their challenges have included immigrating to the United States and adapting to a new way of life, coping with learning disabilities, and juggling multiple jobs while also trying to be active participants in their children’s education.
The stories and images shared in the “HOME” exhibition reflect the indomitable spirit of our lifelong learners. They have prevailed over difficult circumstances to improve vital literacy skills, and ultimately, expand opportunties for themselves and their families in Escondido. Their struggles and successes very much mirror those of the early settlers of Escondido, whose histories are proudly preserved and shared in the Pioneer Room. “HOME” is an acknowledgement and celebration of the diverse stories that reflect the unique heritage and values of Escondido.
