About this Collection
Bringing Claremont’s local history to life, the Claremont Community History collection from Claremont Helen Renwick Library preserves photographs documenting people, places, and community life in the city during the twentieth century. On February 23, 2019, neighbors were invited to the library to share personal photographs that reflect Claremont’s collective past and the stories that shaped it. Many of the photographs highlight the experiences of residents connected to Arbol Verde, one of Claremont's oldest neighborhoods. Established in the early twentieth century, Arbol Verde became home to generations of Mexican and Mexican American families whose contributions helped shape the cultural identity of Claremont. Together, these photographs help preserve the memories, traditions, and lived experiences of a community that remains an important part of Claremont's history.The entirety of this collection was contributed by library neighbor Alfonso Villanueva. The sixteen items featured in the Claremont Community History collection include black-and-white and color photographs that capture everyday moments, community gatherings, and local traditions.
