This album contains 29 black and white photographs likely taken in the first decade of the 20th century by the photographers Schattman, Swenson and other unidentified photographers. One photograph is dated 1900. The views are of Santa Catalina Island located 27 miles offshore southwest of Wilmington, near Los Angeles, California. The island is one of four Catalina Islands and is part of Los Angeles County. The island is 21 miles long and varies in width up to 8 miles with mountains as high as 2,100 feet. The town of Avalon was developed for tourists by William Wrigley Jr. and his son, two of several private owners of Santa Catalina.... View collection guide.
