Adobes in San Luis Obispo County Library Collection
From the mission days of the 1770’s to the mid-1800’s, adobe structures were the dominant building style. The clay soil of San Luis Obispo County is well adapted to the manufacture of adobe bricks and under the tutelage of Spanish Missionaries, the Chumash Indians became skilled adobe craftsmen. Unfortunately, the local climate with its moist coastal influence and seasonal freezing and thawing caused many of the adobe structures to crumble. With the arrival of the Pacific Coast Railway in the late 1870’s, wood became readily available and replaced adobe as the primary building material. As wood replaced adobe brick, the ...

A.E. Hanson (1893-1986): Landscape Designs
A. E. Hanson, landscape architect and land developer, was born in Chino, California on December 20, 1893. After two years of high school, Hanson left to assist his family monetarily, and began working for landscape architect Theodore Payne, and then in 1915 for landscape architect Paul Howard in Los Angeles. Despite his lack of formal training, Hanson started his own firm in 1916 and by the end of the 1920’s he was designing and constructing many of the largest private gardens in Southern California. During the 1930s he developed Rolling Hills in Rancho Palos Verdes, as well as Hidden Hills ...

Aerial Views of Pacific
The University of the Pacific's main campus in Stockton was established in 1924. The first campus was in Santa Clara (1852-1871), and later moved to San Jose (1871-1924). The original buildings on the Stockton campus were designed in the English Tudor Gothic style, and this architectural approach has been maintained in subsequent construction. These aerial photographs and maps document the growth of the University of the Pacific over time, as well as the surrounding area of Stockton. They are from the University Records located in Special Collections.

Aerosol and Cloud Observations in La Jolla, CA, in May-June 2011 during SOLEDAD (Stratocumulus Observations of Los-Angeles Emissions Derived Aerosol-Droplets)
The SOLEDAD campaign consisted of ground-based measurements located near the peak of Mt. Soledad, 251 m above sea level at 1 km from the Pacific coast. Measurements collected for 49 days (1 May to 18 June, 2012) include: particle-cloud partitioning of elemental carbon [Schroder et al., 2014], and salt particle contributions to cloud droplets [Modini et al., 2015]. Measurements on 1 June and 13 June, 2012, of two cloud events contained sufficient observations for characterizing droplet size and composition of the stratocumulus clouds. Chemical composition and aerosol size distribution used to initialize the models were collected inside the instrument container; ...

Aerosol Composition and Size Measurements at Fresno and Fontana
Comprehensive aerosol measurements were carried out during winter (19 December 2014 to 13 January 2015) in Fresno (San Joaquin Valley) and summer (4 to 28 July 2015) in Fontana (Southern California Air Basin). The sampling site in Fresno, managed by University of California Davis, was located behind the UC extension building at 550 Shaw Ave. (36.810 N, 119.780 W). Residential buildings to the north, commercial complexes to the south, and the Yosemite Freeway to the west of sampling location allowed repeated daily measurements of both the residential wood burning and traffic emissions in Fresno. The sampling site in Fontana, managed ...

Aerosol Particle Chemical and Physical Measurements on the 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) Research Cruises
Comprehensive aerosol measurements were collected as a part of interdisciplinary North Atlantic Aerosol and Marine Ecosystem Study (NAAMES). The four NAAMES research cruises measured aerosol particle properties on the R/V Atlantis in the North Atlantic Ocean in 2015 (6 November to 1 December), 2016 (11 May to 5 June), 2017 (30 August to 24 September), and 2018 (20 March to 13 April). The particle mass concentration, size distribution, and chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols were measured during both cruises. Ambient air containing marine aerosols up to several micrometers was sampled using a common inlet about 18 m above sea level. ...
