N.A. Chandler Gold Rush Era Letters
A gift from John I. Perkins to the Ella Strong Denison Library at Scripps College in 1942, the N. A. Chandler Gold Rush Era Letters collection consists of fifty-six handwritten letters from 1855 to 1872. Fifty-five of these letters are from N. A. Chandler to Jane M. Chandler and one letter is from Jane M. Chandler to N. A. Chandler. Four letters were written on picture sheets, two from California display Gold Rush motifs and one from Lowell, Massachusetts displays statistics of Lowell Manufactures for 1859. NAACP, Region 1 Photograph Collection
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Region 1 photograph collection consists of photographs from records of the NAACP Region 1 Office, and includes material from NAACP branches in the Western United States, the NAACP National Office and other organizations from ca. 1940-1982. Region 1 includes the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Images range from professionally produced photographs and news service photographs to snapshots. NAACP, Region I, Records
The Records of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Region I document the daily work of the NAACP in the Western United States from 1942-1986 (bulk 1945-1977). Regular additions to the collection are expected. Although the Region initially consisted of four states and grew to include nine, the bulk of the collection documents the work of the Region I Office in California, particularly in regard to statewide legislation. One of the most comprehensive record series is that of Branch Files, which contains documentation of the work of local (usually citywide) branches throughout the Region. The work …

Nag Hammadi Archive
The Nag Hammadi codices, ancient manuscripts containing over fifty religious and philosophical texts hidden in an earthenware jar for 1,600 years, were accidentally discovered in upper Egypt in the year 1945. A group of farmers came across an entire collection of books written in Coptic, the very language spoken by Egyptian Christians. The excavations, prepared by James M. Robinson, the former director of the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity and Professor Emeritus at The Claremont Graduate School, did not occur until 1975 due to travel restrictions and a breakdown in political relations between the United States and Egypt. Nance (Afton Dill) Papers
This is a collection of roughly 265-300 letters written by Japanese American students who were incarcerated in American concentration camps, including Heart Mountain, Wyoming and Poston, Arizona during World War II and all addressed to their pre-war teacher, Ms. Afton Dill Nance. Also included in this collection are pictures of Ms. Nance and her students, probably taken in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Ms. Nance taught English and Social Studies at Malaga Cove School in Palos Verdes, California shortly before the war. Native Americans on the Central Coast
This collection focuses on those members of the Central Coast community who are of California Indian heritage. The original native people of the Central Coast region include the Tataviam from interior Ventura County, the Nicoleño from San Nicolas Island, the Salinan from northern San Luis Obispo County and the following branches of the Chumash Linguistic Family: Ventureño from Ventura County, Barbareño and Ineseño from Santa Barbara County, Obispeño from San Luis Obispo County and Cruzeño Chumas from the Northern Channel Islands.The collection is based on a photographic exhibit that was produced by the Black Gold Cooperative System Advisory Board in …
