Collections in Calisphere
All of the items in Calisphere are organized into collections. Collections bring context to images, documents, videos, and audio recordings. Some collections represent a particular topic or format, some have items created by the same person, and some showcase an institution’s special project or initiative. Use the tabs below to explore the hundreds of collections in Calisphere.
Curious about where these collections come from and how they’re described? Learn more about the collections in Calisphere, including: how primary source records are described; how shared community values and standards guide access to historical materials; how we strive to provide responsible access to digital primary sources--and how you can help!
The Academy
On October 17, 1935, The Academy met at the Hotel Californian in Fresno, California, for the first time. Businessman Thomas Risley was the founder of The Academy. He and university president Frank Thomas selected fourteen men who were the first members. The name "The Academy" was suggested by Reverend James Dowling, a charter member. The Academy's purpose was "to discuss intelligently the problems of the time." There have been prominent Fresnans among the Academy's members. Most were associated with Fresno State College (now California State University, Fresno). There were several presidents: Arnold Joyal, Frederic Ness, Frank Thomas, and Norman Baxter. …

The Atmospheric River-CONNected objECT (AR-CONNECT) algorithm applied to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA V2) - 1983 to 2016
This collection contains the lifecycles of global atmospheric river (AR) objects. This data was produced by isolating regions of enhanced IVT transport events by applying the Atmospheric River-CONNected objECT (AR-CONNECT) algorithm. AR-CONNECT is a four-dimensional (4D) object-oriented algorithm, adapted from the CONNECT algorithm developed by a team of researchers from the University of California, Irvine [Sellars et al., 2013, 2015, 2017]. The algorithm uses a seeded region growing segmentation technique to segment AR lifecycles according to their high-intensity cores. AR-CONNECT determines the lifecycles of an AR by using a flood-filling algorithm to group discrete AR timeslices where they are contiguous …

The California Loyalty Oath Digital Collection: selected documents from the Bancroft Library
The California Loyalty Oath Digital Collection brings together a selection of documents and images from the holdings of four repositories at the University of California: the University Archives, The Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley; the University Archives, Young Research Library, UCLA; the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives, UC San Diego; and the Office of the Secretary of the Regents, Oakland. The California Loyalty Oath Digital Collection comprises more than 3500 pages of electronic text, more than 30 pictorial images, and 15 audio clips, which document the controversy (1949-1951) that roiled the University during the McCarthy Era. The loyalty oath debate reverberated …

The Center for GWAS in Outbred Rats Database (C-GORD)
This collection consists of data from published studies performed in N/NIH heterogeneous stock (HS) outbred rats. The effort is led by Prof. Abraham Palmer, who serves as director. The Center for GWAS in Outbred Rats Database (C-GORD) provides access to the data generated by the NIDA Center for Genetic Studies of Drug Abuse and Other Behaviors as well as physiological phenotypes that comprise of more than 15 research projects. To date, our center has allowed us to accumulate extensive data from more than 8,000 HS rats, with funding already in place to reach 16,000 rats by 2025. HS rats are …

The CONNected objECT, or CONNECT algorithm applied to National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA V2) - Integrated Water Vapor from 1980 to 2016
This collection contains global Integrated Water Vapor (IVT) objects and captures water vapor transport mechanisms important in global water vapor transport (e.g., tropical cyclones, monsoons) including life-cycle tracking. This data isolates IVT transport events by applying: The CONNected objeECT, or CONNECT algorithm. The four-dimensional (4D) object oriented algorithm was developed by a team of researchers from the University of California, Irvine [Sellars et al., 2013, 2015]. Earth science variables can be described as statistical 4D objects evolving in space (2D), time (1D), and magnitude of the selected variable (IVT in this case) (1D). The algorithm defines objects by identifying instantaneous …

The Cross-Surfzone/Inner-shelf Dye Exchange (CSIDE) Study
Understanding the role of surf-zone and inner-shelf processes in the fate of shoreline released tracers is critical to predicting coastal water quality and minimizing the human health impacts from point source pollution. During the NSF-funded Cross-Surfzone/Inner-shelf Dye Exchange (CSIDE) study, 2-surf-zone tracer releases conducted in Imperial Beach, CA and 1 Tijuana River/Estuary mouth release during ebb-tide were observed over relatively large scales (>1km, >5h) using a suite of in situ and remote sensing instrumentation. Tracer evolution was affected by multiple overlapping processes, such as rip-currents, internal waves, and tides, illustrating the complexity of tracer evolution in the nearshore (surfzone+inner-shelf) region.
