Palos Verdes Library District's History Collection presents a panorama of what was important in the Peninsula’s past, as well as what might be meaningful to future generations. It encompasses a variety of formats: books, school yearbooks, maps, photographs, newspaper clippings, genealogical data, early phonebooks, and ephemera.

California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. California Revealed is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

Malaga Cove Star Newspaper
Collection includes issues of an entirely self-published and edited weekly newspaper created by 13 year old James "Jimmy" Damon, and three other local youths. The newspaper ran from approximately 1938 to 1942 and reported on both local and international issues. The Star provides an interesting perspective of the life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula during an important period of U.S. history. James "Jimmy" Graham Damon Jr. was born in Providence, Rhode Island on September 17, 1926. Palos Verdes Bulletin
The Palos Verdes Bulletin was a monthly newsletter which began publication in November 1924. It was produced by the Palos Verdes Homes Association and distributed freely to homeowners, lot owners, residents, and potential buyers of land which became Palos Verdes Estates. The Bulletin contained news on the activities of the Homes Association, the Art Jury, and the general progress of the Palos Verdes Project development. Information on new buildings, architecture standards, landscaping ideas, and amenities such as the golf course, the riding stables, and the swim club was accompanied by numerous photographs. Palos Verdes College Photo Collection
The photographs in this collection document the Palos Verdes College, a private, two-year, co-ed, liberal arts college, once located off of Crest Road in the Rolling Hills area of Rancho Palos Verdes. The college opened in September 1947 under the direction of founding president, Dr. Richard P. Saunders, who came to Palos Verdes from New York University. Palos Verdes Homes Association Photo Collection
The Palos Verdes Homes Association Photo Collection was donated to the Palos Verdes Library District by the Palos Verdes (PV) Homes Association. The photographs in this collection were featured in one of the earliest publications on the Peninsula, the Palos Verdes Bulletin. The Bulletin, published from November 1924 to October 1931 and then again form October 1932 to June 1933, provided updates to residents and potential property buyers. The Palos Verdes Homes Association continues to this day overseeing building and landscaping throughout the City of Palos Verdes Estates.

Phillips Ranch Photo Collection
The Phillips Ranch Photo Collection documents the lives of the Phillips Family, one of the early ranchers on the Peninsula. In the late 1880s, portions of the Rancho de los Palos Verdes originally part of the Rancho San Pedro became the property of Jotham Bixby. Harry Phillips was hired by the Bixby Family to manage the Rancho. The Phillips Family ranched, raised cattle and horses and also farmed the area. Many of the photos in this collection are taken in the area that is the Palos Verdes Golf Course.

Your Story is the Peninsula's Story (YSPS) collection is part of an Institute of Museum and Library Services grant (#40-8615) awarded to the Palos Verdes Library District's Local History Center to help preserve and make accessible the unique history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
