The Maritime Research Center provides access to the library, archives and museum collections and encourages research in maritime history and humanities. Within the library collections are over 34,000 book and periodical titles dating from 1536 to the present, 50,000 pieces of ephemera, over 3000 maps and charts covering the Pacific Basin and the West Coast of the United States dating from 1850 to the present, audio, and video materials in multiple formats.

Collection Summary: Approximately 575 linear feet including folders of textual materials, ledgers and logbooks, oversize folders of textual or graphic material, scrapbooks, photographic prints in standard and oversize formats, negatives, transparencies, motion picture film, audiotape and objects. The collection is comprised of two large acquisitions. The first portion, accessioned in 1983 and processed in 1987, consists of approximately 308 linear feet of logbooks and other corporate documents (bulk 1927-1943). The second portion (bulk 1938-1988), with which this finding aid is primarily concerned, was transferred from American President Lines (APL) to the San Francisco Maritime NHP Historic Documents Department in February …

California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. Dring (Harry) Photographs
The collection primarily documents the restoration and maintenance of the historic vessels at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park from 1954 to 1982. The bulk of the collection holdings consist of black-and-white photographs and negatives created or collected by the ships' manager Harry Dring from 1957 to 1976. Other items include photo albums and motion picture film. Along with restoration and preservation of the vessels, the collection documents daily activities at Hyde Street Pier....
