The San Mateo Public Library has a large collection of California history materials with an emphasis on San Mateo and the Bay Area. The San Mateo Main Library offers: a reference book collection, the California Collection, focused on local history materials; a clipping file of topics from local newspapers from the 1940's, 1950's and 1960's; San Mateo City directories from the 1890's - present; historical maps of San Mateo and the surrounding area including Sanborne insurance maps; and local newspapers on microfilm.

California Revealed from San Mateo Public Library
California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. California Revealed is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

San Mateo Local History Collection
The collection has two primary areas of interest, the first is the history of the city of San Mateo, the second is a record of the city's on-going relationship with the 101st Airborne, Company A. The historical photographs cover a broad range of San Mateo City's history, primarily commercial buildings. Collection includes several photographs depicting the damage caused by the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. San Mateo Public Library's Screaming Eagles: San Mateo's Adopted Sons Collection contains primarily photographs and correspondence documenting the City's adoption of 101st Airborne, Company A during the Viet Nam conflict.
