From College to University - SCU's first 150 years
The identity of California as we it know today began during the 19th century when California experienced a period of transformation. This era marked a move away from its origins as a Spanish colony, then a Mexican province, followed by a brief period as an independent republic before becoming the 31st state in the United States in 1850. Its earliest inhabitants were Native American populations who were gradually outnumbered, first by European colonists and later by American settlers attracted to the West during the California Gold Rush of the mid-1850s. As peoples and cultures collided the need of both local …

In 1937 and 1938 Father Hubbard lived on King Island, with his boats, dogs, expedition members, and more than 100 tons of supplies and equipment. Mission Santa Clara Sacramental Records
As all Roman Catholic clergy are obliged to do, the priests who staffed Mission Santa Clara kept meticulous records about the sacraments at which they officiated. Over the past few decades, mission sacramental records have proven to be of inestimable value in helping scholars reconstruct the rhythms of life in pre-1850 California. These different kinds of records offer clues about daily life at Mission Santa Clara. Careful examination of these records has enabled anthropologists to recover the size and location of a number of indigenous villages, and thus has immeasurably increased our knowledge of native California before the arrival of …

Paper, wood, and copper
This collection features illustrated books from the original Mission Library and from the early Santa Clara College collection, with books dating from 1518 to 1803. As printing became accepted as an art form in its own right, printers sought for ways to add decorations – ornamental capitals and illustrations – on their own. The woodcut, which was already in use to print holy images to sell to pilgrims, suited perfectly. Both movable type …
