Sonoma State University Library's Special Collections have significant historical value and the items in each collection are worthy of permanent preservation. Books, photographs, personal letters, periodicals, media, and artifacts are included. Emphasis is on the history, people, and culture of the North Bay region of California, but some collections cover a wide range of subjects. Special Collections and the SSU Archives offer a rich environment for intellectual discovery and can greatly enhance your research experience. The collections are available to anyone wishing to incorporate primary sources into academic or personal research projects and classroom instruction.

Modini Ranch Journals Digital Collection
James (Jim) and Shirley Modini, Sonoma County natives, lived at Pine Flat Road Ranch from World War II until their deaths, his in 2011 and hers in 2012. In 2000, the Modinis worked with the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District to designate their land as “forever wild”. In 2009, the Modinis donated the property to Audubon Canyon Ranch, a land conservation group that manages preserves in Sonoma and Marin counties. Jim and Shirley Modini documented ranch life in northern California for almost 70 years (gaps).

North Bay Ethnic Digital Collection
The North Bay Ethnic Digital Collection features material related to the forced relocation of northern San Francisco Bay Area residents to Incarceration Camp Amache near Granada, Colorado. It includes correspondence, photographs, and reports. Some of the original items are housed with the Sonoma County Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), and were borrowed for digitization courtesy of the JACL. The remainder are housed in Special Collections. These items are also featured in the CSU Japanese American Digitization Project.

North Bay Historic Preservation Digital Collection
The images in the North Bay Historic Preservation Digital Collection constitute an important chronicle of local buildings and represent a significant piece of the region's social, cultural, and anthropological history dating from the mid-1800s. The majority of photographs were taken in the 1970s by Sonoma State University students enrolled in the Historic Preservation Program, part of Sonoma State University's History Department.

Roy Maxwell Talbot Digital Collection
Photographs, artifacts, and documents from the private collection of Roy Maxwell Talbot related to his long and eventful career in China as a Chinese Maritime Customs Service official (1908-1942). He retired to Berkeley, California in the 1940s.
