The Critical Theory Archive holds the scholarly archives of major figures who have worked in the fields included under the loosely defined rubric of "critical theory." The existence of the Archive recognizes the key role that scholars at UC Irvine have played in the development of the field since the 1970s and the significance of Critical Theory in UCI's academic programs.

De Man (Paul) papers
Paul de Man was a prominent and influential literary critic, scholar, and teacher best known as one of the principle theorists behind an approach to literary and philosophical texts that became known as deconstruction. The unpublished manuscripts in this online collection are book length projects that Paul de Man worked on during his life but never published. There are two separate manuscripts, a handwritten manuscript on Rousseau entitled Textual Allegories, and the edited collection of translations The Portable Rousseau.

Mark Poster born digital files, 1985-2009
Mark Poster (1941-2012) was professor emeritus in History and Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Irvine. First hired in 1969, Poster played a central role in UCI's emergence as a leading center for work in Critical Theory. He helped launch the Critical Theory Institute, first as an informal reading group and then as a formal research center in 1987. He also served as director in its early years. Richard Rorty born digital files, 1988-2003
Richard Rorty (1931-2007) was a pragmatist philosopher, critical theorist, and public intellectual. Included in this collection are electronic word-processing files, created between 1988 and 2003. The files were retrieved from Rorty's 3.5" floppy disks and converted to PDF format in order to facilitate preservation and access. Included are letters, many drafts of writings, lecture notes, syllabi, and exams. Also included are bibliographies of his work, a few administrative files, and a couple of documents relating to his children.
