The California State Archives houses records that document the broad scope of California government and its impact on the people of the state. The collection consists of textual records by the millions (in boxes and bound volumes) and graphic records by the thousands (maps, architectural drawings, photographs). In addition to these paper-based records, the collection contains audio and visual materials, both analog and digital, and electronic records in a variety of formats.

Alfred Eichler Collection
Like many state architects, Alfred Eichler’s name is not widely known, yet the public structures he designed in his nearly four decades in the Architecture Division of the California Department of Public Works reflect the everyday lives of many Californians – schools, hospitals, office buildings, prisons, border inspection stations, bridges, historic restoration projects, and state parks and fairgrounds. The Alfred Eichler Collection (Identification # F3274) contains 431 images, comprising architectural drawings, sketches, and watercolor paintings Eichler created from 1925-1962. California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. McCarthy (William M.) Photograph Collection
The William M. McCarthy Photograph Collection consists of eleven photograph albums (approximately 3 cubic feet of material). The 2,998 photographs, taken between 1905 and 1938, include family, personal, and vacation photos taken by William M. McCarthy while he and his wife traveled on automobile trips across California primarily, but also the United States in general, Mexico, Canada, and Cuba. The photographs depict William's interest in armories, tourist attractions, historic sights, and family.

"Old Series" Trademarks
This collection highlights California's early years of trademark filings under the state's Trademark Registration Act (Chapter 129, Statutes of 1863). California began registering certain container brands in 1861, but trademark registration for all types of products began in 1863, seven years prior to federal legislation. California was the first state in the Union to allow trademark registration, and today those doing business in California still register their trademarks with the Secretary of State.
