Through a collaboration between California Department of Fish & Wildlife, NOAA Fisheries Service and Scripps Institution of Oceanography a cooperative was formed in 1949 to study and document the Pacific Coast Region. This group was named The California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) and was initially charged with studying the collapse of the sardine population in coastal California and has evolved over the years to study many aspects of marine life and climate science. Established in 2008 as a collaborative project of the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program and the Library, the HLHW aims to preserve the memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Norman A. Spencer, Ph.D. has taught at universities in Africa, China, and the U.S. including the China Communications University in Beijing. From 1999 to 2019 he repeatedly traveled to China documenting notable artists, writers, directors and musicians active in the Chinese independent and underground film and art scene. Reports from government patrols are a major source of primary information on Papua New Guinea’s colonial-era history. Patrol officers and other officials wrote detailed documents reporting on all aspects of the work carried out by the patrols. The reports give first-hand accounts on many topics, from first contact with remote Highland villages, to census counts, tax collection, health care, justice, labor recruiting, plantations, missionaries, anthropological descriptions, tribal warfare, languages, and more. Paul Pickowicz, Distinguished Professor of History and Chinese Studies at UC San Diego, traveled to China as a member of Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars (CCAS) Friendship Delegation from June 23 to July 24, 1971. He was working towards his PhD at University of Wisconsin, Madison during that time. Included in this collection are color slides that captured many aspects of China during his trip in 1971.

Chinese Independent Film Festival posters and ephemera from the Li Xianting Film Fund Archive and REEL China Film Festival that occurred during 2004 to 2016. REEL China was an influential Chinese documentary film festival biennial organized by the New York City–based Chinese artist Zhang Pingjie that introduced Chinese independent and underground documentary film first to Americans and later to Chinese audiences mostly in Shanghai.
