"Gatherings: Event, Agency, and Program" (Gatherings) is a work of new media art that was written, produced, and performed by Jordan Crandall, a professor and new media artist in the Visual Arts Department at UC San Diego. Gatherings is a mixed-media performative lecture that studies the nature of events and new forms of awareness, cognition, and material agency that emerge in the wake of technological change. It shows how technologies of tracking and surveillance transform people and objects into actors, influence them to come together as matters worthy of attention. Through a collaboration between California Department of Fish & Wildlife, NOAA Fisheries Service and Scripps Institution of Oceanography a cooperative was formed in 1949 to study and document the Pacific Coast Region. This group was named The California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) and was initially charged with studying the collapse of the sardine population in coastal California and has evolved over the years to study many aspects of marine life and climate science. The video recordings represent events organized by the Holocaust Living History Workshop (HLHW). Established in 2008 as a collaborative project of the UC San Diego Jewish Studies Program and the Library, the HLHW aims to preserve the memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. James Sanford and Jean Doyle traveled to China in March 1972 as part of the Committee of Concerned Asian Scholars (CCAS) 2nd Friendship Delegation. The 30 member group were divided into two smaller ones of 15, each to have its own separate itinerary and guides upon leaving Guangzhou, their initial stop in China. The two groups converged again in Beijing towards the end of the trip. Sanford and Doyle’s group went to Changsha, Shaoshan, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun, Beijing, Foshan and Guangzhou. The color slides in this collection documented their trip in 1972.

Norman A. Spencer, Ph.D. has taught at universities in Africa, China, and the U.S. including the China Communications University in Beijing. From 1999 to 2019 he repeatedly traveled to China documenting notable artists, writers, directors and musicians active in the Chinese independent and underground film and art scene. Most of the photographs were taken in Beijing and later in Dali in Yunnan Province in the southwest of China.
