The Center for Sacramento History educates and enriches the public by collecting, preserving and making accessible the region's vast cultural heritage.
Founded in 1953, the Center for Sacramento History (CSH) is funded by the City and the County of Sacramento and is the repository and research center for City and County historic collections. These collections are held in the public trust and reflect the many aspects of the social, political, geographic, and cultural history of the Sacramento region.<br>
The collections held at CSH include both three-dimensional museum artifacts and archival records (public documents, and manuscripts and personal papers). The Center's museum collections document Sacramento material culture –the tools employed, the clothing worn, the art enjoyed –and showcase the great diversity that calls the region home.
Within the archival collections are the official records of City and County government and the Superior Court of Sacramento County, and manuscript collections of prominent individuals, families, businesses, organizations, and community groups of the Sacramento region. The Center thus serves as a "total archive" in documenting all aspects of the city and county's history. CSH's holdings are open for research and available for display at accredited institutions that meet the center's security and environmental requirements.

California Revealed from Center for Sacramento History
California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. California Revealed is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

Center for Sacramento History Photo Collection
Impressive in both size and scope, the photographic collections at the Center for Sacramento History amount to more than five million images and include a variety of photographic types and processes. The photographs come from our public, manuscript, and personal collections and document Sacramento's origins as a small riverfront town to the burgeoning state capital. The wide array of historic images, range from the earliest known daguerreotype of Sacramento, made around 1850, of the New World steamship docked along the city's Embarcadero, to contemporary views that capture the development of the Sacramento and the surrounding region.
