Cities of Destiny Oral History Project Collection
The Cities of Destiny Oral History Project interviewed immigrants and minorities in Los Angeles. These histories document interviewees’ life experiences, including their early years in their native country, their journey to the United States, and their impressions of their new home country. Interviewers for the project were students taking Liberal Arts 196 at Cal State Northridge during the Spring semester of 1982.

Harold Giedt, the child of American missionary parents, was born and raised in Shanghai where he attended the Shanghai American School, found himself back in China in 1945 as a newly-commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Having received training from the military in Mandarin Chinese, he was posted to an assignment in Civil Affairs in Tientsin. Giedt was an enthusiastic amateur photographer, and, before leaving for China, acquired a Kodak Bantam 828 camera for colored slides and a twin lens reflex for black and white photography. Gilbert and Sullivan Advertising Cards
Trade cards are small, rectangular cards that typically have promotional text on one side, and a decorative image on the other side. These cards first became popular in the late 17th century in major European cities, and became extremely popular in America beginning in the late 19th century. They functioned as both advertisements and maps that directed eager customers directly to a store that was selling the item, as the location was usually listed on the back of the card. The Gridiron - California's Fighting Newspaper
In 1926, Andrae B. Nordskog began publishing The Gridiron, a Los Angeles weekly paper that promoted public utility reform. In 1927, he became actively involved in the Los Angeles-Owens Valley water controversy and began to publish articles and editorials which championed the Owens Valley’s cause and criticized the City of Los Angeles, Department of Water and Power, and other prominent local businessmen for using Owens Valley water to cheat Californians out of millions of dollars in San Fernando Valley property deals. Nordskog’s research has significantly influenced the way historians have viewed the Owens Valley controversy.
