Throughout his remarkable life, Dr. Murphy developed wide-ranging interests, but his link to the field of medicine remained constant. In 1975, with support from the Ahmanson Foundation, he established the Franklin E. Murphy, M.D. Fund for the History of Medicine in honor of his father. By providing a permanent endowment for the acquisition, conservation, and cataloging of materials related to the history of medicine, the fund helps ensure that the History and Special Collections Division of the Louise M. Library Special Collections documents the history of scientific discoveries and inventions, research trends, communities, and communications, and teaching methods and materials in medicine and its allied health fields and the biological sciences, all of which advance UCLA's research, teaching, and learning mission. The various collections of the History and Special Collections Division support the study of the history of medicine and biology. Collections consist of books, journals, manuscripts, prints, portraits, and medical artifacts.

The Index of Medieval Medical Images project began in 1988 and aimed to describe and index the content of all medieval manuscript images (up to the year 1500) with medical components held in North American collections. The goal of this 2001 pilot project was to make a substantial sample of the images and descriptions available via an online searchable database.
