The UCSF Special Collections contains manuscripts (primarily modern) and papers of individuals; historical records of UCSF hospitals; administrative records of regional health institutions; photographs and slides; motion picture films and videotapes; oral histories; pamphlets and born-digital materials. The Manuscript Collection exists to complement the official holdings of institutional records housed in the Archives. While the collection is not strictly restricted by subject, these materials will usually encompass the following broad subject matter: the practice and science of medicine; biomedical research; healthcare delivery, economics, and administration; health professions education; operations and history of UCSF, its schools, program, and affiliated partners as appropriate; alumni collections including club memorabilia, diaries, photographs, reunion books and scrapbooks. UCSF has the preeminent collection documenting the history of HIV/AIDS epidemic that was started through the UCSF AIDS History Project in 1987 and has been growing even since. The Biotechnology Archives document the leadership of scientists and corporations in the Bay Area in the development and growth of biotechnology. The East Asian Collection is especially strong in works related to the history of Western medicine in Japan from the middle of the 16th century to 1900. It also holds books and journals related to the history of medical societies and medical and pharmacy schools in Japan. Other areas of strength include traditional Chinese medicine, Buddhist medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and acupuncture. The Japanese Woodblock Print Collection consists of 400 prints and 100 scrolls, dating from 16th to the 20th century.

ACT-UP Golden Gate Records, 1988-1993
The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT-UP) New York was formed in March 1987. ACT-UP San Francisco was formed a year later. ACT-UP Golden Gate separated from ACT-UP San Francisco after a contentious meeting on September 14, 1990. The focus of the new group was on treatment, research, education, and prevention issues. An all volunteer organization, much of the work was done by committees, and weekly meetings were held to discuss proposed demonstrations, educational campaigns, meeting with corporate or governmental officials, and endorsements of other organizations actions. AIDS Legal Referral Panel Files
The AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP) provides access to free and low-cost legal services for people with HIV or an HIV-related legal problem. The panel also promotes the rights of people with HIV through its Public Policy Program. Files produced by the AIDS Legal Referral Panel including annual reports for the years 1987-1991, and subject files containing correspondence, notes, and reports. MSS 96-01.

Andrews (Richard) Papers
Collection contains AIDS-related material from the early epidemic in San Francisco. Sally Hughes collected the material during an interview with Dr. Andrews for the Community Physicians Oral History Series. Materials include: newspaper clippings, correspondence, drafts, brochures, ephemera, reports, surveys, and other publications that largely relate to the Bathhouse debate in San Francisco, California. Arthur E. Guedel Anesthesia collection
Arthur E Guedel, M.D., was an anesthesiologist and clinical professor of anesthesia at the University of Southern California. The collection documents Dr. Guedel's long career as an anesthesiologist, scientist, and includes a variety of material related to his research and his professional service. The collection also includes material from Dr. A.E. Bennett, Dr. William Neff, Dr. Leonard Ramsay Thompson, Dr. Ralph Waters, and Dr. Richard C. Gill. The collection also includes material from the Guedel Memorial Anesthesia Center and includes a variety of material related to its administration, meeting minutes, photographs, and correspondence. Berne (Eric L.) Collections
The Eric L. Berne digital collection features scanned documents and images from six related collections held at UCSF Archives and Special Collections. Materials document the work of Eric Lennard Berne, a practicing psychiatrist, lecturer, and author, best known for his development of the theory of Transactional Analysis (TA). The author of eight major books, including the bestseller Games People Play, Berne was also a consultant in psychiatry at Mt. Zion Hospital and the McAuley Neuropsychiatric Institute (St. Mary’s Hospital) in San Francisco, and an Associate Psychiatrist and Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center.
