The Al-Salih Tala’i Mosque, built in 1160 AD during Cairo's Fatimid caliphate, was commissioned by Amir Al-Salih Tala'i ibn Ruzzik, who served as vizier to two young caliphs and is linked to a narrative about the shrine of al-Husayn's head, which he reportedly brought to Cairo but was ultimately placed in the Sayyidna al-Husayn mosque. The mosque features unique construction over shops, creating trenches that suffered from groundwater issues, threatening the mosque's structural integrity. The Al-Salih Tala'i mosque's wooden minbar, dating back to 1299 AD, is the second oldest Mamluk minbar in Cairo. It underwent various restorations, including dismantling and reconstruction in 1898/99 A.D., as well as repainting in the 1980s. In 1995, Dr. Jaroslaw Dobrowolski and Dr. Agnieszka Dobrowolska photographically recorded the Minbar's condition, and in 1997, Dr. Ewa Parandowska produced a thorough report detailing the Minbar's current state of preservation. The report also suggested repair and conservation measures. Al-Salih Tala'i mosque, built in 1160 AD by Fatimid vizier Amir Al-Salih Tala'i ibn Ruzzik, is one of Cairo's oldest surviving mosques, and it features unique architectural elements. The mosque suffered damage from the 1303 earthquake and underwent restoration in the late fifteenth century. The mosque was almost completely rebuilt, with only the original qibla wall remaining. The interior features brick arcades with keel arches, stucco Kufic Quranic inscriptions, a mihrab that showcases the earliest use of naskhi script in Cairo's architectural decoration, and the second oldest Mamluk minbar in Cairo. The Conservation and Documentation of the Tomb Chapel of Menna (TT 69) project was implemented by Dr. Melinda Hartwig, a professor at Georgia State University, from 2007-2009. The project’s objective was the conservation, archaeometric examination, and digital recording of the painted tomb chapel of Menna, to set a precedent for non-invasive methods of analysis. Dr. Hartwig worked with an interdisciplinary team of conservators, digital specialists, Egyptologists, and scientists, with the support of Georgia State University and the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (formerly the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities). From 2007 to 2010, the Egyptian Museum conducted a collections management and documentation project, Egyptian Museum Registrar Training. This project coincided with other projects focused on the preservation of the registration record books (ledgers) and the creation of a database for the Egyptian Museumʼs collections, allowing optimized safekeeping of the historical information critical to the museum’s objects. This undertaking, establishing a registrar office and training its staff, was the first of its kind in Egypt.
