The Library's Department of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) serves as the principal location for the historical research collections at California State University, Sacramento. The primary strengths of the collection are post-World War II political, social, and environmental history of the Sacramento region and the history of the California State University, Sacramento, since its founding in 1947. The Department's holdings include printed books, manuscripts, and university archives. Subject collections are comprised of both published and unpublished sources and include the Japanese American Archival Collection (JAAC), the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection of rare books and manuscripts, and the Magnus Hirschfeld Collection of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transexual History. The department holdings include formats such as oral history transcripts, photographs, posters, broadsides, audiovisual materials, microforms, prints, paintings and other ephemera.

California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. California Revealed is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

Japanese American Archival Collection
The Japanese American Archival Collection is comprised of approximately 2,100 original items, including letters and other textual documents, photographs, diaries, scrapbooks, newsletters, art work, clothing and artifacts. The collection provides valuable insights into the history of Japanese American communities in northern California, particularly in the town of Florin, California from the late 19th century and into the 20th century. The collection contains significant documentation related to the internment of Japanese born and Japanese American individuals during World War II.

Sokiku Nakatani Japanese Teaware Collection
The Sokiku Nakatani Japanese Teaware Collection presents the ceramics, scrolls, and tea utensils collected and used by Sokiku Nakatani in her studies and as a teacher of Chado (the Way of Tea). The 147 items in this Collection were donated to California State University, Sacramento in 2006 and are housed in the University Library’s Department of Special Collections and University Archives. The items in the Collection, because it was the personal collection of Sokiku Nakatani, demonstrate her level of expertise, interests, and aesthetics, and they also serve to promote understanding and interest in the study of Tea and in Japanese …

Southeast Asia Community Resource Center Collection
The Southeast Asia Community Resource Center Collection (MSS 2005/65) was compiled over a 20-year period by the Southeast Asia Community Resource Center, in Rancho Cordova, California, as a project of the Refugee Educators’ Network. The collection features monographs housed in the library's main collection, as well as photographs and artifacts. The photographs and artifacts in this collection, which include artwork, handicrafts, toys and dolls, musical instruments, and items of clothing and jewelry, document and bring to life the everyday experiences of Asian-American immigrants to California.
