Founded in 1901, the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology is dedicated to the study of cultures from yesterday and today, both near and far. Today, the Museum contains an estimated 3.8 million objects from California and around the world, as well as extensive documents, photographs and film recordings. We continue a legacy of enrichment and education, functioning as a research unit for the University of California, Berkeley by supporting scholarly discovery and community-based research.
Located in the heart of the Berkeley campus, we have grown into a museum that studies the past and the present in order to encourage dialogue, understanding, and respect. We facilitate connections by helping people relate to objects, cultures, and to one another.
With a collection containing millions of objects, we are constantly working to tell the stories of the cultures around us. Stories that demonstrate our shared humanity and the myriad connections that bring communities—from around the world—closer together.

California Revealed is a State Library initiative to help California’s public libraries, in partnership with other local heritage groups, digitize, preserve, and provide online access to archival materials - books, newspapers, photographs, audiovisual recordings, and more - that tell the incredible stories of the Golden State. We also provide free access and preservation services for existing digital collections for partner organizations with in-house digitization programs. California Revealed is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

Ethnographic Photographs of California Indian and Sonora Indian Subjects by Alfred L. Kroeber, 1901-1930
The information presented in the container listing, taken from the photographic ledger catalogues, is as complete as possible. Dates and places are missing when they were not originally recorded. The numbers that are included in parentheses for some of the photographs from 1907 refer to a series of bodily measurements, taken as part of a survey of the physical anthropology of California Indians. These were published by Edward Winslow Gifford in 1926, California Anthropometry (University of California Publications in American Archaeology and Ethnology, vol. 22, no. 2).
