The collection contains treasures of the performing arts ranging from the Gold Rush Era to the present time. It holds a part of the preeminent history of the performing arts and the unique history of San Francisco. The Museum's diverse collection includes books, periodicals, playbills, clippings, photographs, posters, sheet music, plays and librettos, radio interviews, videotapes, musical theater recordings, the Legacy Oral History Program, the Theater Film Archive, theater design research materials, costumes and set design renderings, personal papers of performers, patrons and critics, as well as the archive of several local performing arts organizations.

The Christensen Family Digital Archive consists of images and documents chronicling the life and career of Lew Christensen and his brothers, Willam and Harold. Materials in this digital archive were curated from two collections at the Museum of Performance + Design: the Christensen-Caccialanza Papers and the Henrietta McDowell Memorial Photography Collection. Preserving Bay Area Dance Legacies presents highlights from key San Francisco Bay-Area based dancers/choreographers whose papers are a part of the Elyse Eng Dance Collection at the Museum of Performance + Design. Dancer/choreographers represented in this exhibit include Carlos Carvajal, Gary Palmer, Welland Lathrop, and June Watanabe.
