The Special Collections and College Archives department, located on the third floor of the Library, houses Oxy’s collection of rare books, visual media, sound recordings and other primary source and rare materials that support the College’s teaching mission. It is also home to the historical records of the College which consist of faculty and alumni files, student publications, campus photos, and administrative files.

Henry (Bill) Collection
Bill Henry (1890-1970) was an American writer and journalist who lived and worked in Los Angeles, California from 1907-1970. His professional interests focused on sports, automobiles, aviation, and presidential politics. This collection consists of his writings, research materials, correspondence, and memorabilia relating to sports and American diplomacy during the 20th century.

Japanese American Relocation Collection
The collection consists of correspondence, magazines, newspaper and journal articles clippings, and publications from the War Relocation Authority, religious groups, as well as civil liberties organizations. It also has a series of correspondence to and from Occidental President Remsen Bird's office, and meeting minutes and other publications from the National Japanese American Student Relocation Council.

Occidental College Bessie Beatty Collection
The Special Collection of photos, diaries, letters, news articles and books from the life of Bessie Beatty was originally loaned by the Beatty family to Occidental College Professor Norman Cohen as research for a biography of her life. The result of his extensive efforts is a significant collection donated to the College by the Beatty family that illustrates the life of a journalist, writer, activist, and radio host who attended Occidental College from 1903-1906. Her story is known by few people today, but in her day she associated with everyone from Eleanor Roosevelt to Vladimir Lenin and traveled around the …

Occidental College Campus Design
Occidental College was established in 1887 in Boyle Heights, just outside the then city limits of Los Angeles, moved to Highland Park and then to Eagle Rock Valley. The Eagle Rock campus is designed by renowned architect Myron Hunt with landscape design in 1937 by Beatrix Farrand. On the occassion of the 100th anniversary of the campus, Special Collections & College Archives is building an online collection of photos, documents, maps and architectural plans and drawings to offer details about 100 years of Occidental College campus design.

Occidental College Railroading
This digital archive of fifteen artifacts display the California History Research Seminar (History 279) class research with the John Lloyd-Butler Railroadiana Collection during the spring of 2008. Their research demonstrates an ideal of railroad transportation as a “spatial concept.” More specifically, this “spatial concept” perceives the railcar not only as a means of transportation but a cultural space unto itself.

Occidental College Stereographs
This digital archive presents selected stereographic views from the American Civil War, the Cuban and Philippine campaigns of the Spanish American War of 1898, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904, and the World War of 1914 to 1918. Sixty stereographic cards were selected from the holdings of the Charles D. Klamm Stereograph Collection to be described and analyzed by the students in the History of Photography (Art History 287) class during the spring of 2008. There are over 10,000 stereographic views in the collection documenting subjects of the 19th and early 20th century.
