Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
First known as Long Beach High School, it was funded by a $10,000 bond and dedicated in May, 1898. With the opening of the Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1911, the school became the American Avenue Grammar School. A fire destroyed the school during the Christmas holiday of 1918. Another bond was passed and George Washington Junior High School was built on the site only to be destroyed in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.
Long Beach High School at the corner of 8th St. and American Ave. (renamed Long Beach Blvd.). The multi-story building still has tiled roofs, arched porticoes, and stucco finish. The cupola has changed since its dedication in 1898.
