Photograph caption dated June 25, 1948 reads, "A whole side of a mountain 245 feet high was blow [sic] up today by construction crews to make way for widening operations. on [sic] Highway 99, near Castiac. Above is a scene of the blast. Workmen spent nearly a month drilling 178 holes in the mountain and planting 5000 pounds of explosives for the blast."
