Description
View of the former post office looking northeast from Plaza Park, now known as Plaza de Cesar Chavez. The post office clock tower was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake but without the pointed steeple. Since the original clock was destroyed in the earthquake, a new clock was purchased, a Century Clock designed by Danish immigrant Nels Johnson and guaranteed to run 100 years. The clock has lived up to its name by running continuously since 1908. The old post office housed the San Jose Public Library from 1937 to 1970, and is now part of the San Jose Museum of Art.
