Description
“An open air service. This was the first baptisms, autumn 1924. Dr Arthur leading.” Group portrait of a congregation at a baptism in a clearing in a forest. The first eighteen Mwimbi Christians were baptised, by Dr John William Arthur (1881-1952) from Kikuyu, on 28 September 1924. Dr Irvine was not ordained until 1933 and certain duties were performed by ministers from Kikuyu or Tumutumu. ❧ This image is from the first years of the Chogoria mission in Kenya, which was run by the Rev. Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974), from the collection entitled ‘Chogoria, 1922. The early days.”
