Description
This 1976 photograph provides a view of the entrance to the Sacramento County Library’s Arcade branch, located at 2443 Marconi Avenue. The structure – one of the first earth-berm commercial structures in Northern California – was designed by long-time area architect John Harvey Carter. In 1986, architecture writer Janice Fillip spoke to the Arcade’s civic impact in the following words: “the Arcade Library succeeds on both the functional and aesthetic levels, but its greatest importance to Sacramento’s built environment may be as a symbol …more buildings should speak with such eloquence.”
