Description
Paul MacCready flies the Orlik in a soaring contest over Torrey Pines, on the Southern California coast north of San Diego, in the spring of 1948. He was then 22 years old and a graduate student at Caltech. A few month later he won the 15th National Soaring Championship held at Elmira, New York, with the same plane -a Polish-built sailplane with 49.5-foot wing span. About the open cockpit, MacCready wrote on the back of the photo: "It was much more fun without the canopy." 1948
