Photograph caption dated October 24, 1963 reads "Mike Helwig, outstanding fullback for Taft High School, tries out crutches. Helwig will miss the important Taft-Birmingham game Friday due to a fracture of the foot. Helwig has gained 343 yards in 41 carries this season. He will be replaced in the Taft lineup by Sam Tate."
