Title supplied by cataloger.; Photograph edited for publication. Agness ""Aggie"" Underwood (December 17, 1902 - July 3, 1984) was an American journalist and newspaper editor. She worked as a reporter for the Los Angeles Record from 1928 to 1935, and for the Herald-Express from 1935 to 1968. In 1947, Underwood became the first woman in the U.S. to hold a city editorship on a major metropolitan daily, the Herald-Express. Photograph caption dated May 20, 1967 reads, ""Roy Swift and Agness Underwood Assistant managing editor of Herald-Examiner honored by Social Security Administration. Agness Underwood, assistant managing editor of The Herald Examiner, today holds an honor for journalistic excellence presented by the Western Region of the Social Security Administration as the group ended a three-day conference here. Mrs. Underwood received the award yesterday afternoon at a luncheon-meeting at the Airport Marina Hotel from Roy Swift, national Social Security information officer. Also honored at the luncheon were Robert Abernethy, NBC-TV news reporter; Mike Yurechko, managing editor of the area News-Advertiser newspaper group, and Mrs. Ruth Washington, business manager of the Los Angeles Sentinel. Social Security field representatives from seven Western states met at the hotel for training in communication and administrative skills. More than 100 field representative attended the conference. Al Bartolic, Inglewood field representative, served as chairman. In presenting the award, Mrs. Underwood and The Herald-Examiner were cited as 'good friends of the Federal Social Security Program'.""
