Description
Photograph was edited for publication purposes
This Chevrolet assembly plant opened in 1947 and produced the Chevrolet Corvair, Chevrolet Nova, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet full-size models and the Pontiac Firebird. The plant was closed in 1992 after the production of Camaro and Firebird vehicles was moved to Sainte-The´re`se Assembly in Quebec. In 1998, the facility was razed and replaced with a large retail and industrial complex, known as The Plant. GM continues to operate a car-testing facility nearby.
Photograph caption dated February 21, 1948 reads, "Hundreds wait patiently in lines to enter new Chevrolet assembly plant in Van Nuys as public opening reached its final day. Large modernistic plant was constructed at cost of $12,000,000 and at peak operation will employ 1500 persons."
