Description
“South suburb Moukden [Shenyang]. Roman Catholic Cathedral in distance.” Townscape looking over the capital of Manchuria towards a cathedral that dominates the skyline. The Catholic mission has been in Manchuria since the early nineteenth century and suffered badly during the Boxer Rebellion when Bishop Guillon was burnt to death in Moukden. The Irish, Scottish and Dutch Presbyterian churches were all active in the Manchuria field and worked together from the earliest years eventually uniting in 1890 to form the indigenous Presbytery, named Kuan Tung, with Chinese as the official language. ❧ Moukden was the centre for Scottish Missionary activity in the Manchuria field and a number of hospitals, schools and orphanages were built there. Dr Dugald Christie (1855-1936) is strongly associated with Shenyang after being appointed to the field in 1881. It was there that he founded the Moukden Free Hospital and also the Moukden Medical College where he encouraged the education of indigenous doctors and medical staff.
