Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 A former assistant coach at USC and the AFL's Los Angeles Chargers, Al Davis served as AFL commissioner before the league merged with the NFL. He then became the Oakland Raiders' managing general partner, building them into one of sports' most succesful franchises. After winning a lawsuit against the NFL, he moved the Raiders to L.A. before the 1982 season. Then, after negotiating to build stadiums in Irwindale and Inglewood, Davis re-located the Raiders to Oakland after the 1994 season. Passionate and controversial, Davis continues to live by one motto: "Just win, baby." Photo dated: May 18, 1984.
