Ammon Meshach Tenney (1844-1925) was born in Lee County, Iowa. His family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1840s and emigrated to Utah in 1848. The family then lived in San Bernardino, California, for a time before returning to Utah in 1858. In 1859 Ammon was called to work on an Indian mission to the Hopi and Kaibab tribes, and also did mission work among the Zuni and Isleta Pueblos people in Arizona and Mexico. He began settlement of St. Johns, Arizona, in 1879. Tenney served on missions to Mexico in 1876 and 1887-1889, and was made president of the Mexican Mission in 1901. In 1884 he was imprisoned on polygamy charges, and in 1890 returned to Mexico with his polygamous wives until about 1912. All of his wives later separated from him, and Tenney died in Thatcher, Arizona, in 1925.
